There are many factors you should consider before buying a CPU for the RTX 3090 and I’ll cover the most important ones in this article. You might also be tempted to buy one of the top-selling CPUs, but there are downsides that you might not know yet. So let me help you get ready to make the right decision.
Several weeks ago I was in the market for a new CPU. Intel’s Z390 platform had just launched and it was time to upgrade my trusty old X99 motherboard. I was also looking forward to trying out the Intel 9th Generation i9-9900K and seeing if this beast of a processor could justify its lofty price tag. I didn’t get around to getting this CPU as because of some delays at the manufacturer end, I went ahead and bought an AMD Ryzen 7 2700X instead.
Number of CPU cores Required
The number of cores required is the first thing that you should consider. Automated rocket landing, video encoding, and other applications which are memory intensive could be beneficial for a CPU with a high core count.
You should always go for more cores. More cores mean more efficiency. No performance, no matter how much your graphics card improves, will ever matter if you have a weak CPU. The more CPU cores you have the better performances will be at generally everything. For example, video editing, working with 3D applications, or video games that are capable of utilizing multiple cores (most games don’t do this but still!).
The first thing you have to do is to make sure if your motherboard is compatible with the RTX 3090. So what I did is that I asked for a recommendation on what motherboard to pair it up with. But mostly, it is important to have a processor socket type that is already supported by the video card. So I am going to take one of the latest motherboards from GIGABYTE, the Aorus Z590 Gaming X. This board also comes with support for Intel Core processors.
