Best GPU for 1080p 144Hz Gaming – Buyer’s Guide

Chances are your gaming setup might be facing a dilemma. Either you are trying to find the perfect monitor for your PC, or you have already created one but want to know what is the best GPU for 1080p 144Hz gaming.
Today we are reviewing the best graphics cards for 1080p 144Hz gaming. As you may know from our previous guide, we researched the majority of graphics cards available and came up with a list of 10. From that list of 10 graphics cards, we have narrowed it down to the top 3 choices for purchasing the best graphics card.

So, you are looking for an excellent GPU for gaming at 144Hz? Or do you want to upgrade your old GPU to make it capable of running the latest games in 1080p 144Hz? This buyer’s guide is going to help you find the best GPU for this purpose! You will learn about different performance criteria and choose a suitable graphics card for your needs.

Today’s post is all about the best graphic cards for gaming and it’s specifically geared towards 1080p 144Hz. Now, I know that there will be plenty of people who will disagree with me on which cards are the best.

Again, this is my general recommendation for a good graphics card for typical high-end builds as there are numerous factors that go into why you should choose one graphics card over the other. For example, if you’re building a remote desktop computer then the video card becomes pretty irrelevant.

There are many options when you are looking to buy a new graphic card, and it can get overwhelming quickly. To help you choose the right one for your needs, I’ve done my research and tested several options with different games at 1080p 144Hz. Here is what I found out.

CUDA cores/ Stream Processors

Comparing the number of cores in the same architecture is more illustrative than comparing different architectures, so looking at Nvidia Pascal and Ampere CUDA cores (or streaming multiprocessors) is not as useful as looking at Amps separately.

Comparing Navi and Vega or Polaris Stream processors is more meaningful than considering Polaris and Vega on the same architecture and different computing nodes. The reality is that all architectures scale according to the area of the matrix (or the 7nm node in this case).

This provides more information than a different number of cores in the same architecture. Therefore, looking at the ampere-Cuda core is not as useful as looking at the ampere stream processor. The same is true for Ryzen Steam processors and Intel cores, which has caused a general misunderstanding of which processor to buy.

GPU Video Memory

Graphics card memory, also known as VRAM or video memory, is the amount of dedicated graphics memory on the graphics card. This dedicated video memory is only used for video output. All of this seems too much, but when you are playing games, having a lot of dedicated memory is very useful, allowing your games to run smoothly and with excellent graphics.

The VRAM for purchasing a 1080p game is at least 6GB, preferably 8GB. Or higher. After enabling all settings or installing a high-resolution texture pack, you will need more memory. When playing at a very high resolution (such as 4K), it is ideally 8 GB or higher.

Clock Speed

In addition to the clock frequency, there are other factors to consider, such as the GPU architecture and the number of cores used. For example, the RTX 2060 has a lower clock speed than the RTX 2070 Ti, but it also has fewer cores, so even on the same production node, its gaming performance is usually lower.

The graphics processing unit (GPU) on the graphics card can run, which also means the speed at which the graphics card processes frames. Getting better and better, it is important to ensure that the current game can be played without any problems.

You can read our guide to the best graphics card to find the right graphics card for you according to your budget and performance needs. Your graphics card can run on GPU, the higher the number, the faster the speed and the higher the efficiency.

If your maximum frame rate in a game is 60 frames per second, having a graphics card with a higher clock speed (or upgrading to a better graphics card) means you can play the game at a higher resolution or in more detail.

TFLOPS

TFLOPS, or trillions of floating-point operations per second, is a measure of the maximum theoretical performance of a GPU. The number of cores multiplied by the GHz clock rate multiplied by 2 gives the GPU TFLOPS.

Architecturally, TFLOPS usually indicates that it runs faster than other chips on the chip. However, by comparing architectures, we can determine which GPU is best for tasks like GPUs.

Form Factor

I know this may sound silly to some of you, but it’s important if you are upgrading a system or building a new one. Graphics cards can come in four form factors — single-slot through dual-slot, and then a more extreme version with additional power connectors (which I’ll explain shortly).

So you need to make sure you have the room in your case for your card. The height and thickness are also important. This allows you to choose a compatible CPU cooler if necessary.

Card thickness is an issue when choosing graphics cards that use an older PCI slot (also called PCIe x1 or PCIe x16) found on motherboards with only one 16x slot left; the majority of graphics cards are now 2/3-slot or larger

Ports

If you run a multi-monitor setup, it’s important to have monitors with the correct connectors for your graphics card. Unfortunately, different monitor types support different video ports. Some monitors have HDMI, and others use DisplayPort. A few support USB Type-C routing DisplayPort signals, but these are relatively rare.

We’ve rounded up five graphics cards that work with monitors that support the HDMI, DVI, DisplayPort, and USB Type-C ports. These ports are more common than you think and will leave you no longer restricted to your primary display.

TDP

Since you will encounter different terminology, it can sometimes be confusing to consider updating your computer. If you want to upgrade the graphics card, the first thing you need to understand is the thermal design power (TDP).

Power (TDP) allows you to estimate the wattage required to run the card in the standard configuration. The player must have a good quality power supply. This is where quality is critical because the power supply unit must provide sufficient voltage and current for the components in the system.

The power consumption of a graphics card is measured in a unit called TDP or Thermal Design Power. More importantly, TDP provides a rough estimate of how many watts the graphics card will use in the standard configuration.

At the end of 2010, when Nvidia launched the TITAN and GTX 5xx card series, the situation completely changed. These are the first graphics cards with a TDP (or total graphics performance) exceeding 200 watts.

What graphics card do I need for 1080p 144hz?

The new RTX 3060 can easily handle 1080p at 144Hz with ultra graphics settings. It can also run with ray tracing enabled, but there’s a moderate drop in FPS. Here’s where DLSS 2.0 comes in and provides 1080p 144Hz with ray tracing enabled. That’s why the RTX 3060 is the best for 1080p 144Hz.

Can a 1650 super run 144Hz?

Yes, the GTX 1650 super is a powerful entry level graphics card. It’s based on Nvidia’s Turing architecture which offers mind blowing performance. So the GTX 1650 can run at 1080p 144Hz with medium to high settings on all modern AAA games.

How do I know if my graphics card supports 144Hz?

Most modern Nvidia or AMD graphics cards must support 144 Hz, but this may require a display port cable. The monitor’s resolution, refresh rate, and graphics card settings all affect video performance.
